The many different projects we have implemented in recent years in India and China have given us a wealth of experience and insights into the domestic plastics industry as well as into the local markets. In particular, working together with the local employees in situ gives us a deeper understanding of their culture and mentality. For one thing is very clear: To achieve sustainable success in these countries, it is necessary to have such a profound understanding. You must know and observe the local “rules of the game”. The crucial factor is not to replace simply a perspective based on Europe or the West by an Asia-centred view. We see ourselves as a mediator for reducing the distance between each position. We believe that this multi-perspectival approach allows to avoid making dangerous mistakes and failures on both sides.
Our Point of View
Growth Markets: China and India
China and India are the world’s largest growth markets representing approx. a third of the world population. For the first time in history, China has overtaken the USA as the world’s largest economy in 2014. Both countries are characterized by extreme contrasts and both countries have to find their own way to deal with deeply rooted traditions and customs on the one hand, as well as with the western lifestyle on the other. In the era of globalization, more and more Asians are confronted with western values and ideals. But let us not forget: The influence of the western world comes only from 10% of the earth’s population and both countries have long since developed a new independent profile and an own self-confidence. Asia’s rise and the attendant shift from an Atlantic to a Pacific era means for us that Europe must now adjust to changing global realities.
China and India have taken off the status of an export platform and neither Beijing nor Delhi are no longer satisfied with orders from the West. Asian companies are steadily improving their position particularly in the mid-market segment. But both countries have a high technology deficit with a high growth potential. More and more Asian companies want to internationalize their business model and turn to western markets searching new partners, opportunities and their know-how. On the other hand, the demand for high-value, industrial products is increasing in the country itself. The problem is that these products still have to be adapted to the locally tailored needs.
Particularly the plastics industry with its innovative products and over-proportional growth has best chances to be successful in the Asian markets.
